In 3D this week we watched a video on Ray Johnson and I really loved it. My collages have been expanding and I've been exploring more with context, and this film/documentary was inspiring and thought provoking.

Work at the gallery today, enjoying some coffee from La Va and a gustav klimt coffee sleeve that I thought I'd share (it was the last one). Basically just doing work this weekend, brother's birthday is tomorrow so I'll be headed home for that. I'm looking forward to the warm weather we're supposed to be getting, it's supposed to be 62 the night of my show's closing so wear your cool weather clothes and walk down south street at night to see the farewell of these portraits on wood I did.

Tonight I went to the stoop lecture and it was definitely worth while. The speaker, John Hawke, gave a slide presentation of his work and then the floor was open for discussion. It started off kind of slow, and I'm not going to lie I was pretty exhausted and my mind kept drifting. However, as he delved into his work more and more and the discussion perked up it became a much more in depth conversation that ultimately turned to art as a form of activism and where the line is drawn. It as even brought up as to whether John could call his work "art" and why he calls it "art" and his approach to it. His answers were more than satisfying and if you missed the STooP event that's very unfortunate and I'd say keep your ears and eyes open for the next one. It's important not only to hear from the visiting artist but also to hear from our peers and what their thoughts and ideas are.

Hello! Did anybody else submit for the really-free gallery/ go to the opening?? It was awesome. I'm sorry if anyone missed it, that'd be terribly unfortunate and I really don't understand why more people didn't do it. It was FREE and it was a SHOW. and the opening was great too, there was awesome jazz music and food and people and who doesn't love an opening. I wish more people submitted so it would have been overwhelming and over flowing with art. oh well, maybe next time.

I think it's important to not only blog about visual artists but also performing. Music and lyrics influence almost all of my work. I think I'll update my music choices on here as the semester goes on.

THIS weekend a group of peabody kids went to see Emily Pukis's show and it was so alive. I hadn't been in a pit since sometime last april (depressing, I know) and so this was such a good fix. Being such a little thing I didn't feel afraid but it did get tiring and unfortunately my glasses broke, but I guess that's just a great story to go with it. The show was raw and maybe not something I'd listen to all of the time music wise but for the moment and the people and hte time it sure did fit.

So it's second semester and colour is now suddenly apart of everything. When I think about my sketch books and my projects I can't help but think about this book, Monster Mama, whose vibrant colors I was drawn to at such an early age. I wonder what other children's books my other classmates are connected to and influenced by.

Week-end

Today it was raining and I crawled out of my warm cozy bed and made my way down to the gallery where I sat from 12-6. I had some friends visit and an interesting artist from Vancouver come in and we spoke for a good while about music and influence and life and health care and biking and all of these great things. I also sipped on coffee from La Va and worked on my 2D assignment and also began my computers assignment. Tonight = film showing/work night-cheers little birdies.

Todays lecture on Community Art/ Art Education/ Art History was definitely beneficial. The community art department sounded really interesting, I think if there's room for it in my schedule I'd like to tamper in there- maybe not for use as my major but to gain a better understanding of the community we're thrown into here. Art Education was neat because I'm thinking about getting my teachers certificate. Art History was good to hear from too because I've been thinking about minoring (seriously, 2 more classes is totally worth it)





These are some photos from todays drawing class. We started with the charcoal drawing and then worked into several pastel drawings. I have to say I was nervous about using color again but this proved me way wrong and I had a lot of fun with it. The Beach Boys, Woody Guthrie, and the Flaming Lips added to the vibes. Sometimes I can't believe how insanely lucky it is that I get to go to school for art. My sister is an accountant and my brother is an actuary and I just can't even begin to imagine the lifestyle they lived as it compares to mine.
After drawing I went to a lecture having to do with photography and its use in painting and I really got a lot out of it. It was definitely worth the 2 hours, the basic topics that were addressed had to do with the use of a photograph as an object, the message a photograph sends vs. a painting, journalism vs. painting and along with that there were a great deal of images having to do with war and comparatively advertisement. It's amazing to think how our brains process images and our ability to regurgitate without comprehension the sights we see. Thomas Eakins and Vincent Desiderio were among my favorite of the artists discussed that used photography.

Week-end

This weekend was indescribable, seriously, honestly, I'm telling the truth, I hardly believe it was real. The opening for FOUND was such a success, and not in a sense that I sold sold sold all of these works of art that I was showing, but in a sense that all the people that I loved and cared about and was friends with and maybe even not really close friends with came out to see the show and talk and enjoy the surroundings. I wanted to cry on several occasions just because it was such a beautiful sight and feeling. There's a great photo there taken by Mike C. from the show and I think it captures the energy to a tee.  My cheeks were stiff from smiling- it was only four hours but by the end I was exhausted. If this description interests you- come to 2020 south street on feb 18th 6-10 and see the shows closing. Works by Lauren Rinaldi, a Tyler painting alum, were also incredibly well received and supported. It was such a beautiful weekend.
The rest of the photos are just snippets from my sketch book, my drawing homework from the week/throughout the weekend (ink and charcoal), and a spread from the RED themed folio for my 2D class (acrylic/watercolor/pen&ink). I also included a photo of some copper bolts I found at an abandoned train track in the city, I love their color and texture and hope to work from them this semester.
FINALLY- our friend Chris P. baked my roommate Loo and I some cookies and this was the package we received.

Week-end

This weekend was great, except I lost (and found) my I.D about five times. I guess my mind is adjusting to living back here again. Aside from the time working on our latest drawing project (20 drawings of a single object, I chose a tea bag) 2D and 3D, this weekend was pretty eventful. 
Friday I went into the city to get a dress for the opening this coming Friday with my room-mate, and then that night I worked on my 20 drawings and spent time with some good friends. 
Saturday I was originally planning on going to the Vox Populi to see a film and listen to the curator but plans changed and I ended up having dinner with a group of girls from the dorm because it's restaurant week! For those of you who don't know, restaurant week is a great time to explore some of the restaurants we have in the city- for a set price they put together a menu of appetizers, entrees, and desserts, and the customers pick and choose the items they want. Earlier in the week I went to Kuma and then Saturday we went to the Marathon because J&H was booked. I liked the Marathon much better- very clean concerning both food and atmosphere. 
Sunday I dropped off some art work, went to Blick and finished up my drawing assignments. Monday was great because I was able to see my cousin Peter off before he left for the Marines (he recently graduated) and yet another restaurant. This time we went to the Prohibition House, definitely cozy and pretty affordable for center-city-esque. 
This weekend is something to look forward to. Opening, showings, and hopefully the  Mütter  Museum Sunday.
It's getting so cold out!! I heard 10 inches for tomorrow!! (EDIT: woke up to about five inches, and it's been snowing since...classes cancelled!) I can't wait for when it thaws out just a little bit so being outside/bike riding is more enjoyable.
